To Elias Grave Esqr – Justice of the Peace in & for the
County of New haven comes Daniel Meigs of Guilford
in Sd County & to your worship Complains that on the
Night of the Seventeenth Day of January Instant your
Complainant was Lawfull owner & in said Guilford Possessed
of a certain Horse well Worth Twelve Pounds in Lawfull Money
which some Disorderly Persons with a design to injure & hurt
your Complainant Maimed and Damaged by cutting of one of his
said Horse Ears & likewise cut of his main & Tail which doings
are to the Damage of your Complainant the sum of Twelve Pounds
Lawfull Money & Your Complainant has Good reason to
Suspect that said Damage was […] & done as found by Benja
min Bradly Willcox Abraham Scra^ton Jacob Conkling &
George [Crover]
Milton Graves all of Guilford. all which Disorder &
Damages are against the Peace of the Governor & Company of
the State of Connecticut & Contrary to the Statute Law of said
to the Damage of your Complainant Ten Pounds Lawful Money
State in such case made and proved & there upon prays […]
may Issue to some Proper Officer Authorizing him to bring
before your Worship the said Willcox Scranton Conkling & [Crover]
that they may dealt with as to Law & Justice appertains
Dated Guilford the 22nd Day of January AD. 1783
To the Sheriff of the County of New Haven his Deputy or Either of the Constables of the Town of Guilford within said County------Greeting
In the Name of the Governor & Company of the State of Connecticut you are hereby commanded to arrest the
Bodies of the aforesaid Willcox Scranton Conkling & Crover forthwith & them to have before the Subscribing authority to be Examined & Answer
be compelled to pay […] said Damages
to the Matter in the foregoing Complaint to be dealt with
as to the Law and Justice appertains Bond sufficient for processing them
being given, Thereof Fail not but Lawful return make
